Each week we explore different themes and media. from the local landscape, to botanical, portraits, people and animals! All welcome, materials included but feel free to bring your own. Booking advised, £10 per session (£7.50 concs)

Sand Cast Candle Making

Create beautiful and unique candles, by casting wax into sand molds, then decorate with beach finds such as shells, sea glass or pebbles.

Learn about different wax types, safe working methods, correct wicks and how to colour and fragrance with essential oils.We will be using eco soya pillar wax - The finished candles have a light sand crust and are ideal for indoors or outdoors. You will have time to make about 3 candles of varying sizes.

Coastal Path Discovery

An artist led session where we can go out draw and discover the wild coast of the North Atlantic, where there is so much to draw.

Many wild plants will be encountered along with unique stunning views. The first part of the session will be out and about then we can return to the studio to do a full treatment on a drawing or two. hopefully by then end of the session you will have a small portfolio of sketches and finished works on a variety of papers and mediums.

Watercolour Abstract Landscapes

A dedicated session to play with the paint and do some interesting images. We will start by going out and drawing some iconic and eye catching shapes of St Ives which we can then take as a basis to work reducing them to abstract patterns to make finished work.

Alfred Wallis (1855 - 1942) was a naive artist who lived and worked in St.Ives. Study a little of his life and working methods, and take inspiration as a basis for your own artwork.

THE ART OF MONOPRINT

Monoprint literally means single - a print technique using line and mark making directly from an inked surface, thereby creating a different image with each paper print. You can also retrace a drawing to produce multiple versions, all slightly different. It is a wonderfully tactile method, that produces a host of interesting, and sometimes unexpected results, great for those new to printing.

The workshop is led by Zoe Eaton and Pete Giles who will show how to develop your mage from drawings or photographs, and abstract mark making. Using single colour, water based bloc printing inks, which can then be tinted with watercolours or drawing media. We will also look at how this medium is used by contemporary artists such as Tracy Emin.

Gain an introduction to drawing portraits, with Zoe Eaton. During this session we start by looking at the basic proportions of the face. Followed by drawing from a model, with fun warm up exercises,and quick poses. The Abstract Canvas

2 Day Course £130

A two day course dedicated to exploring approaches to abstract painting, and develop your own style - with Zoe Eaton and Bobby Wotnot.

During the course we will be looking at different types and approaches to abstraction - including Expressionism, Geometric,, Organic, Reductionist and Minimalism. On the first day, we visit The Tate St.Ives to explore the work of some artists representing some of these styles. Back at the studio, work on exercises in mixed media designed to explore these approaches.

On day two, start to develop your own style, and work on studies for a final piece - finishing with an acrylic painting on canvas. The course is suitable for all levels and abilities, with beginners to painting welcome.

'SHIBORI' - THE ART OF JAPANESE TIE DYE 

The traditional craft of Shibori uses a series of folds and bindings with string, wood and stones. Learn some basic folds and techniques to achieve simple or complex patterns - Make wonderful designs using authentic natural indigo dye. NATURE RELIEF TILES

Create beautiful art pieces with Plaster of Paris tiles! We will be using natural foraged materials, including plants, seaweed, shells, and seeds - then get creative with your own arrangements. With Zoe Eaton, learn how to create a mold with your chosen items, and mix Plaster of Paris to cast your mold. The Plaster picks up fantastic details, and makes a lasting durable cast.. You will have time to make 2 tiles - that can be painted later when fully dried.

Introduction to Bas Relief Carving

Gain an introduction to Bas Relief carving, and make a decorative tile with plaster. Bas Relief is a form of sculpture, where just one side of a carved material can be seen, usually with a flat back. This decorative technique can often be seen in architectural fixings, tiles or artwork.

During this session we will look at design ideas, carving tools and techniques Learn how to mix Plaster of Paris, and then carve into a pre-made plaster block. Plaster is soft to work with until fully set, and an ideal material to gain quick results. It is also great for beginners and children to achieve lovely results. Leave with a carved tile, that can be painted at a later date when fully dried out, or left white and simply sealed. Makes a lovely art piece for the home or garden. Be Prepared to get messy!All materials included.

An afternoon where we will go outside to draw the stunning local scenery and experience the elements! Make a number of sketches that can be further developed.We will provide advice on pen drawing techniques, how to create interesting lines and marks, and other approaches to quickly capturing what you see. Back at the studio will show you how to lay a 'wash' over your drawings to create depth and colour - using water colours, inks and quality paper surfaces. SCULPTURE With Breeze Blocks

Gain an introduction to stone carving techniques - using breeze blocks! These are soft and easy to carve, and ideal for beginners. With Breeze blocks you can gain quick results, and complete a sculpture in a day.

Led by Zoe Eaton, who will take you through all the stages of: Design,  'Roughing Out' your sculpture, and then 'Finishing' with chisles and rasps. You can then paint your sculpture with masonry paint, or seal with PVA. By the end of the day you will leave with a sculpture suitable for indoor our outdoor display. No experience needed, all materials included. Please wear old clothing and closed footwear - gets very messy!

First step is to draw your design, or bring a picture as inspiration, or choose from lots of our images and source material, or the stunning scenery to get you inspired.  

The next step is to transform your image into a 3D little sketch, or 'Maquette'.  This helps to visualise your sculpture, and work out the next stage of 'roughing out' - removing the excess stone to create a rough shape -and then get carving!

SILVERPOINT DRAWING

Silverpoint or Metalpoint is an exquisite technique, first employed by renaissance artists - using real silver and other metals to make images. Drawing on specially prepared surfaces, delicate and responsive results can be achieved, with a soft sheen and permanent finish. The drawings can then be tinted with water colours , inks or gouache. During this workshop with Zoe Eaton, prepare a variety of surfaces and grounds, explore the use of tools and metals, and experiment with mark making techniques.

During the afternoon we will work on a final drawing on a gesso panel, in a subject of your choice.

THE ART OF MONOPRINT

Monoprint literally means single - a print technique using line and mark making directly from an inked surface, thereby creating a different image with each paper print. You can also retrace a drawing to produce multiple versions, all slightly different. It is a wonderfully tactile method, that produces a host of interesting, and sometimes unexpected results, great for those new to printing.

The workshop is led by Zoe Eaton and Pete Giles who will show how to develop your mage from drawings or photographs, and abstract mark making. Using single colour, water based bloc printing inks, which can then be tinted with watercolours or drawing media. We will also look at how this medium is used by contemporary artists such as Tracy Emin.

Wild Botanical Weekend

2 Day Course - £110

Spend a weekend exploring some of Cornwall's plants and fauna, as they grow in their natural habitat. Barnoon Workshop is situated just minutes from a wide diversity of environments including the South West Coastal path, Town Gardens and hidden spots, numerous St.Ives beaches and lush wild countryside, with some of Britain's most beautiful views. The weekend includes plenty of outdoor drawing, with tips and Techniques from our tutors on approaches to capturing the essence of plants, from tiny wild flowers to larger shrubs and trees. Back at the studio, spend more time developing your sketches, with a variety of drawing media and water-colours. Leave with a full sketchbook of studies, and a portfolio of more finished works on lovely paper surfaces. An afternoon where we will go outside to draw the stunning local scenery and experience the elements! Make a number of sketches that can be further developed. Have you always wanted to play guitar, but don't know where to start? Or maybe you have a guitar and started, but have since lapsed playing.

This one day workshop really is an excellent way to kick-start your playing, and lay good foundations for future improvement. With Tutor Pete Giles, who has over 20 years experience teaching adults to play. Pete has developed an easy system to get started, with emphasis on practical skills over theory, using popular tunes, and a combination of individual and group exercises.
